WHAT IS PIÑATEX?
An innovative textile
Piñatex ® products are made from fibers from pineapple leaves.
These leaves are considered waste from the existing pineapple crop.
Piñatex ® is an innovative textile that has been developed to be used as a sustainable alternative to
mass-produced leather and polluting synthetic materials, offering a better choice for a future
best.
Low environmental impact
Pinatex provides textile solutions with low environmental impact that
support the efforts of brands and industries to reduce their
emissions and achieve their climate and sustainability goals.
The pineapple leaf fibers used to create Piñatex are waste
agricultural, which means no additional land, water or pesticides are
necessary to produce the raw material. Thanks to the recovery of
waste, Ananas Anam reduces the amount of pineapple leaves burned, which
reduces CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere.
Each linear meter of Piñatex avoids the emission of the equivalent of 12 kg of CO2.
High social responsibility
By transforming agricultural waste into natural textiles, Pinatex creates a
social impact by introducing new jobs in rural areas,
while providing a second, diversified source of income for producers

Circular economy
Pinatex works on the values of a circular economy, combining research and innovation to improve the
well-being of the earth and its inhabitants throughout the product life cycle.
Cradle to Cradle Certified
The “Cradle to Cradle” certification assesses safety, circularity and
liability for materials
and products in five performance categories in terms of
sustainable development:
-Material health: ensuring that materials are safe
for man and the environment
-Circularity of products: enabling a circular economy through
regenerative products and process design
Clean air and climate protection: protecting clean air, promoting renewable energy and
reduce harmful emissions
Water and Soil Stewardship: Keeping Water Clean and Soil Healthy
Social equity: respecting human rights and contributing to a just and equitable society
How is Piñatex made?
After harvesting pineapples, the remaining suitable plant leaves
are gathered in
bundles and long fibers are extracted using semi-automatic machines.
The fibers are washed and then dried naturally by the sun, or during
rainy season in drying ovens.
The dry fibers go through a purification process to remove
all impurities, resulting in a down-like material.
This down-like pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) is blended with a polylactic acid
corn-based (PLA) and undergoes a mechanical process to create Piñafelt, a non-woven mesh that constitutes the
base of all Piñatex collections.
The Piñafelt rolls are then shipped by boat from the Philippines to Spain or Italy
for a specialized finish.
To make the Original, Pluma and Mineral collections, the Piñtaex
is colored using GOTS certified pigments and a resin top coating is applied to give a
additional strength, durability and water resistance.
A sheet is heat pressed to create the Metallic collection and a high-performance PU transfer coating
resistance is used to create Piñatex Performance.
Piñatex is suitable for fashion, accessories and upholstery and has been used by over 1000 brands worldwide.
